RDC/WALIKALE:AFC/M23 HAVE CAPTURED FIVE VILLAGES IN WALIKALE.
In Walikale territory, the villages of Bukumbirwa, Rusamambu, Kilambo, and Ngengere, in the Muronga locality (Ikobo groupement), have been under the control of AFC/M23 rebels since Monday, May 26, following fighting against Wazalendo militiamen.
According to local sources, AFC/M23 rebels launched attacks against Wazalendo positions in the Muronga locality, sparking clashes that continued on Tuesday until Rusamambu was taken.
The population of the occupied areas took refuge in the bush for safety. The Wazalendo militiamen retreated to Misinga, another village located a few kilometers from Rusamambu.
This advance by the AFC/M23 into other areas is coused by violating of the ceasefire by Wazalendo which was declared by m23 to allow for the completion of the various ongoing peace processes aimed at ending the conflict.
Local leaders lament as a reminder and civil society in Walikale warned a few weeks ago about the reinforcement of troops and ammunition by the AFC/M23 rebels in this part of Walikale territory.
